The Healing Crisis

Your body holds all of your life experiences. Restoring it to better health is a journey, not a one time event; one must let go of outcome and agenda. Myofascial Release (MFR) is not a quick fix. Healing is feeling and feeling is healing, if it's to bring about meaningful change.

The healing crisis is a period of time when the body is detoxifying after a treatment, particularly in a modality such as MFR. As the body purges toxins, it is not unusual to experience discomfort. Depending on the individual's level of imbalance and dysfunction within the body-mind, he/she can experience an array of symptoms such as joint and muscle pain; headaches; body aches; sore throat; sweating; chills; nausea and general malaise.

This is a normal — and even healthy — reaction that indicates metabolic waste products are being released from the restricted connective tissue. This reaction may cause increased pain symptoms. It is important to drink plenty of water to flush the body system from these toxins which can help to minimize the unpleasant symptoms. The biggest problem with experiencing the healing crisis is that people are uncomfortable with the discomfort they are experiencing and thus discontinue the very treatment that is helping to make them better. Although the experience may not make you feel particularly good, it is actually a sign that healing is taking place.
